AVIF is built on the same codec as AV1 video and is the most efficient image format in wide use: the same picture is typically about half the size of a JPG, and still smaller than WebP. Browsers have handled it for years, but the rest of the software world has not caught up — desktop photo editors, office documents, chat apps and upload fields routinely refuse an .avif file.

Chrome 85+, Edge 85+, Firefox 93+ and Safari 16.4+. Older browsers cannot decode AVIF at all — if yours is one of them, the tool says so plainly instead of producing a broken file.
AVIF is already lossy, so the picture is re-encoded a second time. At the default 90% the difference is not visible at normal viewing size; use 100% for images with fine detail or small text.
AVIF supports transparency and JPG does not, so transparent areas are filled with white before the file is written. A cut-out subject therefore gets a white backdrop. Use a PNG if the alpha channel has to survive.
